When Vanessa approached me for a maternity & newborn session late last year, I learned that their baby girl was expected to be born with a medical condition.
Their 3-D ultrasound imaging showed that they were expecting at the very least their baby to be born with a cleft lip. Unfortunately, once she arrived it turned out to be a pretty severe cleft that included not only her lip, but also her hard & soft palates. According to webMD, “Cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, affects one in 700 babies annually, and is the fourth most common birth defect in the U.S. Clefts occur more often in children of Asian, Latino, or Native American descent. Compared with girls, twice as many boys have a cleft lip, both with and without a cleft palate.”
Due to the overwhelming circumstances of her sweet baby girl being born with a more significant medical condition than expected, Vanessa decided to cancel Zoe’s newborn session, mainly due to the uncertainty surrounding everything, both medically & financially.
Well, as someone who has experienced the shock of a new baby with a serious medical condition, my heart when out to them. I understood, at least a little bit, of what they were going through. I knew that with her other children newborn photos had been very important to Vanessa, so I really didn’t want her to miss out on this opportunity with her newest baby Zoe.
I reached out to Vanessa, and told her that if she was interested, I would do Zoe’s newborn session for free, as soon as she was stable & healthy enough to come home.
So, when Zoe was about six weeks old, we finally got her into the studio for her newborn session. Because she eats very slowly, she hasn’t gained much weight, and still looks like a newborn – she was also awake almost the entirety of her three hour session, and kept wanting to snack, silly girl!
But we did manage to get a nice variety of images for Vanessa & Zoe to keep and cherish as she grows & changes, and to remember, even after she goes through her corrective surgeries.
