As all parents everywhere know…sometimes, babies just don’t want to sleep. For whatever reason, gassy, hungry, cold, hot, over-tired, over-stimulated, too curious – sometimes, they just won’t sleep. Even after hours of alternating between feeding, pooping, soothing. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work.
In the beginning, when I was first starting out as a newborn photographer, awake babies stressed me out big time. It is true – they are harder to photograph, harder to pose, and harder to keep happy. But now, years into this venture, while still slightly limiting in the poses we can do, if baby wants to stay awake, I am fine with it! Sometimes, those eyes wide open photos are the ones that parents end up printing big!
If we have already tried feeding, changing, and soothing baby for a reasonable amount of time…as long as baby is content, and not crying, we will proceed with the session awake or asleep!
Mr. Sebastian started out as one of those babies who would not sleep. After he was fed & changed, we cuddled him for a little while, and when he stayed awake, we just went ahead with the session. I did work with several different props & poses while he was content to just look around.
Eventually, he drifted off to sleep, and we got into some of the more complicated poses. He was such a good boy!
About four days later, he returned with his entire family for the family & sibling portion of the session. Again, he couldn’t be bothered to sleep for those final few hours he was in the studio. Some babies are just too curious to waste precious minutes on sleep!
